Look Up

The house is quiet.

Windows dark.

Standing at the kitchen counter she stirs her morning coffee and looks down at her phone.

Mindlessly, she chooses the familiar blue icon.

Faces smiling. Animals lounging.

A thumbs up and a heart.

A twinge of despair as an old friend laments the headlines.

Look up

The space is silent.

Dark and vast.

A telescope hurdles through, in search of the unknown.

Circling our blue oasis, it leaves behind the faces, the animals, the atmosphere.

It looks beyond the borders,

In search of light.

Look up

Voices crowd.

Social. Emotional. Demanding.

Consumed, she wastes away the moments looking down at the screen.

Stuck.

Watching the distraction.

In search of meaning.

Or agreement.

Pulled from both sides.

Are we seeing the whole story?

Look up

Focused. Unwavering.

The camera reaches far beyond what’s ever been seen.

Fixed. Empty. Lifeless.

It watches for any bit of light.

Any hint of color.

Collecting all it can.

Is there anything out there?

Look up

Scrolling.

Needing to belong.

Wanting to be heard.

A friend offends and someone fires back.

Words have no tone.

Should we pick a side and stick with it?

Only listen to the prosecution?

Anxious. Angry. Regretful. Depleted.

Is anyone listening?

Can we bridge the gap?

Have we lost our way?

Look up

Circling.

Removed from our atmosphere, the telescope sees more clearly.

Asteroids burn up as they race toward the sun.

Capturing. Chaotic. Colliding.

It witnesses the events.

Collects the data.

Continues on its path.

What else is there?

Look up

Podcasts. News. Noise.

Her children run by.

Dog at her feet waiting to be fed.

Light pouring through the window.

What time is it?

Aware of what she’s missed, yet things seem blurred, out of focus.

Anxious. Preoccupied. She tries to go about her day.

Look up

The telescope finishes its work.

Pictures are sent back to be compiled.

Read. Interpreted.

And what they reveal is breathtaking.

It’s beyond our knowledge.

Beyond our comprehension.

Within that tiny black corner of space came ten thousand whole galaxies of light.

Each one unique. Each one beautiful. Each one full of splendor.

The truth is revealed.

The Creator never stopped creating.

Look up

She looks up from the screen.

Shuts off the noise.

Takes a deep breath.

Reads the Word.

Refreshing. Soothing. Strengthening.

Everything’s more clear.

It’s beyond knowledge.

And what it reveals is breathtaking.

The Truth is revealed.

She picks up a pen and begins to create.
